Government figures show self-employed numbers on the increase

Figures released this week by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) show self-employment has risen by 367,000 in four years, with the sharpest rise happening since 2011. According to the ONS, the number of workers who are self-employed in their main job rose 367,000 between 2008 and 2012 with 84% of that growth among those aged 50 and above.

The findings by the ONS reflect recent reports by PCG, which saw independent economist Stephane Rapelli chart an 82% rise among ‘independent professionals’ working throughout Europe. A second study by PCG, this time with the Small Business Research Centre at Kingston University found that one-person businesses contributed an estimated £202billion in sales to the UK economy during 2011, or approximately 8% of the private sector turnover.
